If they want to go full bore into a full-bodied, almost chewy gingerbread-inspired beer, then they should check out Sam Adams’ offering.
In my opinion, they ought to check out Shipyard’s Gingerbreadhead, to maintain the medium-bodied mouthfeel while pumping up the gingerbread aspect. It seems as though the brewers at Harpoon wanted to offer something new and creative, but were hesitant about alienating some drinkers. And all of the spices combine to overpower any malt flavor, hop flavor and yeasty esthers that may have existed. When you do finally nail down the flavors, you can pick up cinnamon and ginger, but they compete with nutmeg and clove. So much for the rich flavors of gingerbread. You knew they were there because of the labeling and the aromas, but they are not easy to pin down. The first few sips had no easily detectible flavors. Unfortunately it’s head dissipates very quickly so unless you vigorously swirl your glass to rebuild the head, you’ll need to search for these aromas again. Gingerbread is dark brown and has deep, rich flavors of ginger, cinnamon and molasses and has a warm, fulfilling and satisfying quality. UFO Pale Ale is our twist on a traditional British Pale Ale. Fresh and interesting, UFO White is brewed to honor the great Belgian wit beers. Even a ginger snap cookie, or their British cousin, ginger nuts, would have been a better inspiration. The label for Gingerland states that it is “a gingerbread inspired beer.” I don’t know what kind of gingerbread the brewers who created this recipe have eaten, but I don’t want any of it. It seems that this is the year that breweries discover the bandwagon for gingerbread-flavored beers, with Sam Adams pioneering the way with Merry Maker (formerly Merry Michief) Fried sweet ricotta and peach filled raviolo, berry compote, Modena balsamic vinegar. While Harpoon’s UFO Gingerland spice beer claims to be “a gingerbread inspired beer,” I think they could have used a better-quality gingerbread for inspiration.
